Kavanaugh’s judicial record should tell Senate Dems all they need to know The Hill, August 10, 2018 Opinion

August 10, 2018 by scadmin

In 2009, during the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Schumer told her that “your record on the bench” is “the best way to get a sense of what your record will be on the bench in the future.” There’s no reason to have a double-standard today.

Kavanaugh has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals more than 500 days longer than Sotomayor had when she was appointed to the Supreme Court. He has written 307 majority or separate opinions and joined 391 others. Those published opinions, which comprise 8,491 pages, have been publicly available all along; no document requests are needed.

Conservative women in Missouri support Kavanaugh. Will McCaskill listen? August 8, 2018, The Kansas City Star

August 8, 2018 by scadmin

In the last presidential election, Donald Trump won Missouri with 56.4 percent of the vote over Hillary Clinton’s 37.9 percent. He almost doubled Mitt Romney’s 9.4 percent margin of victory with an imposing 18.5 percent margin, winning 110 of 114 counties.

A big part of that overwhelming support came from Missourians who were understandably concerned with the future of the United States Supreme Court. Remember that the seat of Justice Antonin Scalia was held open in order to give the voters an opportunity to choose the direction we wanted for the Court through our choice in the election.

Trump wisely decided to be more transparent with the American people than any other president in history, providing a list of possible Supreme Court nominees before he was even elected. The people of Missouri sent a loud message of approval on election night.

A Moment of Honesty From Chuck Schumer The Wall Street Journal, August 7, 2018, Opinion by Senator Chuck Grassley

August 7, 2018 by scadmin

On July 10, the morning after President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he’d oppose the nomination “with everything I’ve got.” If the weeks since are any indicator, we should believe him.

Presumably, Mr. Schumer announced that he would oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination before he read the judge’s 307 written opinions and the many other opinions he joined.

It stands to reason that Senator Schumer wasn’t too concerned about Judge Kavanaugh’s record before he announced his opposition. Why is it so important to Senator Schumer now?

Brett Kavanaugh has all the right qualifications for Supreme Court The Hill, August 6, 2018 Opinion

August 7, 2018 by scadmin

Judge Brett Kavanaugh is one of the most qualified individuals ever to be nominated to the Supreme Court. He has demonstrated integrity, influence, and experience in his twelve years as a judge on the second most powerful court in the land. On top of this, he authored over 300 opinions while on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Kavanaugh is a graduate of the prestigious Yale Law School, served as an associate counsel to the White House, and as a law clerk to Justice Anthony Kennedy.

His experience and qualifications are very evident. Unfortunately, the Democrats in the Senate are more focused on delay than on consideration of Judge Kavanaugh’s considerable merits.

GOP senators rave about Kavanaugh; Dems prepare to grill him Associated Press, August 6, 2018

August 6, 2018 by scadmin

Now that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has met privately with almost every Republican senator, it’s becoming increasingly clear President Donald Trump’s pick for the bench is running into little GOP resistance to confirmation this fall.

Ask the GOP senators what they’re learning in their private chats and they’ll tell you the following: Kavanaugh loves his family. Lives for the law. And, like the president he once worked for, George W. Bush, he’s open and chatty, the kind of guy you’d like to have a beer with.

Kavanaugh the good umpire the Supreme Court needs The Hill, August 5, 2018, Opinion

August 6, 2018 by scadmin

When President Donald Trump announced his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, he fulfilled— for the second time — his campaign promise to nominate judges to the high court who will interpret the Constitution according to its original meaning.

In his 12 years on a federal court of appeals, Judge Kavanaugh developed a clear, consistent record of textualism and originalism. This means that he can be relied upon to protect religious liberty and ensure that administrative agencies stay within their legal authority.

Take It From a Local Guy — Kavanaugh Well-Suited Wheeling News-Register. August 5, 2018

I clerked for Judge Brett Kavanaugh almost a decade ago. A reflection on my experiences before and after my clerkship makes me confident that this country would be fortunate to have him on the Supreme Court.

Judge Kavanaugh does not allow policy, politics, or his personal views to infect the enterprise of judging — something that cannot be taken for granted in today’s judiciary.

Judge Kavanaugh is not merely a fair and independent jurist, but a generous mentor and devoted friend, father, and husband. America would be lucky to have him on the Supreme Court.

Brett Kavanaugh is a great judge, a good man and great nominee The Louisville Courier-Journal, August 3, 2018, Opinion

August 3, 2018 by scadmin

As a former clerk for Judge Brett Kavanaugh and a native-born Kentuckian, I believe Brett Kavanaugh will be an excellent Supreme Court justice who is right for America and right for Kentucky.  He has been a leading voice for individual liberty and presidential accountability, and his qualifications and character are unsurpassed.

Of course, a mainstream, evenhanded, and independent-minded legal philosophy is not enough. Qualifications matter too, as does character. And on both counts, Kavanaugh is outstanding.

Senate Democrats should meet with Judge Kavanaugh The Hill, August 1, 2018, Opinion

August 1, 2018 by scadmin

Senate Democrats have no excuse for refusing to meet with President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, so they have manufactured one. Democrats say they need even more documents than the White House has offered from Kavanaugh’s days in the executive branch. That is absurd.
